Have you ever created a drawing that you thought was going to be great, only to complete it and realize it was visually boring? What was missing? If you go back and analyze some of your early work you might see it was missing some organization. Composition is the formal organization of your work. To create composition we have to use multiple elements of design and organize them with the principles of art.
Define and add to your text journal the following elements of design.
line, shape, form, value, texture, space, and color
Define and add the principles and art to your text journal.
balance, emphasis, harmony, variety, movement, unity and proportion
When planning a composition one will use several design elements along with many of the Principles to create composition. When planning you want to think about what the finish product will convey. Is there a certain emotion that you are trying to evoke in the viewer? What kind of line creates that emotion? Is there a particular color scheme that tells the viewer what you are thinking?
In your text book create two drawings , One titled Electric Avenue and one titled Time to Rest. Use only line and no more than two colors. You may do one in only black and white.
Project: on an 8.5X8.5 piece of drawing paper create a pen and ink drawing. Divide your composition into 4 unequal spaces, using very light lines. Chose a flower to draw. Put a pattern seen in the flower in the largest section, shade one section black, leave a section white, put three different textures possibly seen in your flower in the other section.
