The fundamentals of figure drawing is to draw what you see; the human brain remembers the leg a a elongated cylindrical figure with a joint in the middle. Our brain remembers a few key shapes and then fills in the rest. We have to retrain our brain to really SEE the body and to be patient and draw what we see…. We will study light and how it falls on the body highlighting muscle groups and bone structure.
Prehistoric cave paintings depict the human forms in simple almost stick figures; it wasn’t until the Italian Renaissance that artists really begin study the actual human figure. Anatomy is very important to an artists to illustrate the human form. One must know how the muscles and the skeleton fit together to get a realistic human form on a flat surface.
