The valuable skill of note taking is overlooked in the public school, students would find more success if we as teachers took more time teaching students how to take notes that created strong visual recall patterns through the use of color, format and visual symbols. There are several ways to take notes, we will go over three basic note taking methods we prefer at artlab101 , you will probably develop a preference to one that is compatible with your learning style. Use color and visual symbols to help record meaning and create unforgettable notes. As you are developing your note taking skills you may realize that you do not prefer lined paper, particularly for art. A bound journal with high quality drawing paper may become the medium of choice for notes, most core subject teachers are amazed at the lovely notes that creative learners take, however, sometimes you may be discouraged from your visual format; stand your ground and use your color. It will help you be successful in the long run.
Cornell Method created at Cornell University in 1950’s, it is useful for organization of thoughts, concepts and terminology. when you use the Cornell Method divide your page into sections. you may use two sections for key words and concepts or three sections for terminology, key words and examples.

Outline Method uses numbers, letters, or Roman numerals to identify and classify information based on levels of importance.
Charting Method with this method you create a matrix or spread sheet; identifying descriptions for columns or rows and then filling in information accordingly.
